Dog Friendly Holiday Lodge Ownership in Cornwall

Filter the listings, find the handful that accept pets, discover most allow exactly one small dog, pay the supplement, then spend the week worrying about the carpet. Owning your own lodge removes that entire exercise, permanently.

A dog friendly holiday lodge is only as good as the walking around it. On the Rame Peninsula you can be out of the door and on clifftop path inside five minutes, which is a very different proposition from driving to a walk.

Owning a dog friendly holiday lodge also means you can go away on short notice. A free weekend in November stops being a logistics problem and becomes a two hour drive.

Below are the practical reasons owners with dogs end up happier than they expected, and the park rules worth checking before you commit to anything.

Walking from the door

The South West Coast Path runs directly past Whitsand Bay Fort, with Rame Head a couple of miles one way and the long sweep of the bay the other. From a dog friendly holiday lodge here you can be walking clifftop within five minutes of locking the door.

We have written a longer piece on walking the coast path from the park if you want the routes in detail. Inland, the Rame Peninsula is a dead end, so the lanes stay quiet in a county that often does not.

Beaches, and knowing the seasons

A dog friendly holiday lodge is worth more if the beaches cooperate. Whitsand Bay gives you several miles of sand below the cliffs, reached by the steep paths down from the coast road.

Many Cornish beaches operate seasonal dog restrictions between Easter and the start of October, so the shoulder months and winter are when dog owners really get the place to themselves. That seasonality is an argument for a proper lodge rather than a summer-only caravan. If your best dog walking months are October to April, you want somewhere comfortable in October to April.

Your own space, set up your way

This is the part of dog friendly holiday lodge ownership people underestimate. In your own lodge you can leave the towels by the door, keep a bed in the corner, fit a boot tray, and stop treating every muddy return as a crisis.

Decking with a gate is worth asking about when you choose a pitch, because a dog that can potter outside safely makes for a calmer stay. Other things to look for: hard flooring in the entrance area, an outside tap if you can get one, and a pitch that is not immediately beside the main road through the park.

Somewhere to eat that does not mind

On-parkNo dog cover needed

A dog friendly holiday lodge is better still with somewhere to eat nearby. On-park, The Fort Inn means a meal out without arranging dog cover, which is a small thing that turns out to matter a lot.

Off-park, Cornwall is one of the easier parts of the country to eat out with a dog, and the Rame Peninsula pubs are generally welcoming. Our local eating and drinking guide covers the ones worth the drive.

What to check before you buy

  • How many dogs are permitted per lodge, and whether any breeds are excluded
  • Where dogs must be on a lead, and whether anywhere on the park is off-lead
  • Whether guests’ dogs are permitted if you let the lodge out
  • Any rules about fencing or gating your own decking
  • The nearest vet, and whether they open at weekends
  • Which nearby beaches have seasonal restrictions, and when

Common questions

Is Whitsand Bay Fort dog friendly?

Yes. Dogs are welcome on the park and most visits here involve at least one. The specific rules on numbers and lead areas are set out in the site rules, and we will go through them with you before you reserve.

Can I take dogs on Whitsand Bay beach?

The bay gives you several miles of sand below the cliffs. Many Cornish beaches operate seasonal restrictions between Easter and early October, so the quieter months are when dog owners get the best of it.

Can guests bring dogs if I let the lodge out?

Usually yes, and accepting dogs widens the pool of guests considerably. Check the terms with the park first, and factor the extra cleaning into your changeover arrangements.

Is the park open all year?

Yes. The lodges are built and insulated for year-round use, which is what makes autumn and winter dog walking practical rather than theoretical.

Come and see it with the dog. Browse the current lodges for sale, look through the park facilities, or request a brochure. A dog friendly holiday lodge widens your options as an owner and, if you choose to let, widens the pool of guests too, though letting income is never guaranteed and a lodge cannot be used as a main residence.

Bring the dog with you

Listings only tell you so much. Come and walk the coast path.

Park tours take around an hour, by appointment, seven days a week. Dogs are welcome on the tour, and we will show you the pitches, the facilities and the paths that start at the gate.
